The armored cruiser "Russia" was built on the shipyard of the Baltic plant in St. Petersburg on the project of the engineer of the Baltic plant N.E. Titov. Officially it was put into service (accepted into State exchequer) on 13.09.1897. It was transferred from the Baltic Sea to the Far East as a part of the 1-st Pacific Squadron. It was the flagship of the Vladivostok detachment of cruisers. It differed from the armored cruisers of other countries by the increased displacement, the high side, and the oblongness. On the armored cruiser "Russia" for the first time in the history of the Russian fleet the special machine of saving move was installed that was working for the middle shaft. During the Russian-Japan War the cruiser was acting on the communications of the enemy between Japan and Korea. On 01.08.1904 it participated in the battle with the squadron of the Japanese armored cruisers in the Korean Bay near the Ulsan Island. It was seriously damaged (48 killed, 165 wounded). After the Russian-Japan War it returned to the Baltic together with the detachment. It passed through the capital repairs in the Kronstadt overhaul shops of the Baltic plant. During the World War I it was the flagship of the 2-d brigade of cruisers of the Baltic Sea. On 25.10.1917 it was included into the Soviet Baltic Fleet. In 1919 the part of the guns of 152mm of the cruiser was removed to the Fleet of the Soviet Latvia for the defense of Riga. In the end of 1922, while tugging to Germany, it got under strong gale and was stranded with the wave setup to the sandbank Develsey near Tallinn. Afterwards it was removed by the rescue party of the Naval Forces of the Baltic Sea to Kiel, where it was disassembled.
