It was launched on 2 August 1900. On 2 April 1903 the cruiser arrived to Port-Arthur. On 28 January in the battle with the Japanese squadron "Novik" made a bold attempt to approach the enemy squadron (according to some available information - even to carry out a mine attack), but the charge of 203 mm that hit the cruiser (in the area of the waterline) forced it to turn back. It took part in the unsuccessful operation for saving of the torpedo boat "Stereguschiy". Not once the cruiser covered the departures of torpedo boats and gunboats, participated in bombardment of the coast occupied by the enemy. After the battle in the Yellow Sea on 10 August 1904 it broke through into the Port of Qingdao. It rounded Japan from the east and came to the Port of Korsakov in order to replenish the reserves of coal for a further break through to Vladivostok. But before it took the bunker, it had to accept the battle with the Japanese cruiser "Tsushima". It got 3 hits under the waterline and over 10 - in the superstructure, whereupon it pulled out - and was not pursued by the enemy. On 20 August 1904 it was sunk by the crew and took the bottom. On 16 July 1906 "Novik" was lifted by the Japanese and repaired, and on 11 July 1908 it came into commission under the name of "Suzuya". In 1913 it was excluded from the lists of the Japanese fleet and disassembled for scrap metal.
