The staff of the construction department headed by S.A. Lavochkin completed in December 1941 the modification of the serial fighter LaGG-3, which they built, into the star-shaped engine ASh-82. The alterations were not big at all, the sizes and the construction of the plane were preserved, but because of the larger midship section of the new engine they extended the second, not-working sheathing on the board of the fuselage. It was made in orderto avoid interrupting of the mass output of the planes. Later on the fuselage was remade. The modificated plane, which received the brand name “La-5”, was accepted for mass production. Already in September of 1942 the fighter regiments equipped with the machines “La-5” participated in the battle under Stalingrad and scored big successes. The battles demonstrated that the new Soviet fighter has serious advantages over the enemy planes of the same class. Its speed - 613 km/h – under good maneuverability was higher than the speed of the best fighters of the enemy. The armaments of the La-5 consisted of two synchronous guns ShVAK. The air-cooling motor was a kind of protection of the pilot from fire from the front hemisphere. Using this characteristic, the pilots of the La-5 carried out frontal attacks fearlessly, imposing on the enemy the battle tactics advantageous for them. In 1943 they produced 5047 fighters La-5. In this issue of the magazine the “toothy” La-5 is represented, which was repainted specially for being given to the captain Georgiy Kostylev as a gift from his brother-soldiers.
