On 26 September 1938 the first cruiser built on the Soviet project, came into commission. Equipped with the best at that time weaponry and armament, the cruiser “Kirov” passed a long and glorious battle path. In the years of the Great Patriotic War the cruiser took an active part in the defense of Tallinn and Leningrad, where already in the first war years it passed 618,5 miles, at that the anti-aircraft gunners of the cruiser repelled successfully over seventy attacks of the Hitler’s aviation and shot down six planes. The most severe trials fell to the crew of the “Kirov” on 24 April 1942, when the ship underwent the massive raid of the fascist aviation. The ship, which was ice-bound and could not move, did not manage to avoid direct hits. For the exemplary fulfillment of battle tasks and the courage and bravery of the personnel demonstrated thereat, the cruiser “Kirow” was the first above-water ship of the Baltic Fleet of Red Banner that was awarded with the order of the Red Banner. In June 1944, when providing the attack of the units of the Red Army on the Karelian Isthmus, the ship executed three more firings and destroyed two big resistance units allotted to the fortifications of the Mannerheim’s line. In the postwar years the famous cruiser still remained in the ranks of the Baltic Fleet of Red Banner, and from 1961 one began to use it as a training ship. On its board in numerous voyages and during the moorage in the bases the students of higher nautical schools and training detachments underwent marine and navigation training. In the summer of 1968 the name of “Kirow” appeared in the columns of the press. When participating in the maneuvers “The North” of the friendly fleets of the Warsaw Pact countries, it was a staff ship. And on the final stage of the maneuvers it took part in the artillery support of the troops landed, and won for that the appraisal “excellent”. In 1975 the cruiser was excluded from the Navy.
