The boats of the type "D-3" were produced in the USSR at the two plants: in Leningrad and in Sosnovka of the Kirovskiy Region. By the beginning of the war, there were only two boats of such type at the disposal of the Northern Fleet. In August 1941 five more boats were received from the plant in Leningrad. All of them were combined into the separate detachment that was operating up to 1943, until the other "D-3" boats, as well as the lend-lease supplies of the boats of the allies started to arrive to the fleet. The "D-3" boats always differed well from their precursors, the torpedo boats "G-5", though regarding their combat facilities they supplemented each other successfully. The "D-3" had the increased seagoing abilities and could operate on the further distance from the base, than the "G-5" boats. On the prototype and serial "D-3" boats for the first time the bow torpedo devices of the board dropping were installed. Their advantage consisted in the fact, that they made it possible, to fire a salvo in "stop" mode, while the "G-5" boats had to develop the speed of not less then 18 bends - otherwise they had no time to turn aside from the torpedo fired. The navigational equipment installed on the "D-3" boats was better compared to that, set up at the "G-5". The deck of the "D-3" allowed accepting on board the landing crew; therewith one could move around on it during the cruise, that was impossible on the deck of the "G-5". The conditions of living of the crew, consisting of 8-10 men, gave the opportunity for the boat to operate for long time far from the main location. Also, the heating of the essential sections of the "D-3" was provided.
